Falling Whistles Interns Blog
Falling Whistles gives a small window into our world’s largest war. Originally just a journal written about boys sent to the frontlines of war armed with only a whistle, readers forwarded it with the same kind of urgency with which it was written and demanded to know – what can we do? The Falling Whistles campaign launched with a simple response - make their weapon your voice and be a whistleblower for peace in Congo. Falling Whistles asks that people read the story and buy the whistle. Proceeds will help restore the lives of war-affected kids.

FWinterns First Event!

Welcome to our first Fall 2011 FWintern blog post!

We are all so excited to be out here and are quickly learning the ropes of the FW office. As the official ‘event blogger’, I have tons to share about the interns’ first event last night in West Hollywood!

Events are a great way for FW to reach out to local communities, in this case the greater LA area, and we had tons of fun. The event was at a gallery highlighting several different artists’ work with a few pieces made specifically for FW.

We had a great turnout and sold lots of whistles while mingling with the crowd. I’ve heard there is an event about once a week, so we are all excited to continue to get out and meet new people through FW.

After the event, an after-party was thrown for FW at Hemmingways Bar in Hollywood, so a couple of us headed over there to try and reach out to more people/sell more whistles. We had a little success there, talked with great people, and met Eric Balfour! He was the guest DJ at the bar and is a huge supporter of FW. We were introduced and, to quote my fellow intern Mackenzie, “it was lovely”.

I call that a great night.

After grabbing some late-night-grub down the street we headed back to our loft and got some sleep to be 100% ready bright and early today. Definitely a fun night and a super awesome start to the next few months!

See ya next time,

Meghan

Tumblrs!

How’s everything going? I am so thrilled to be out here. This fall will definitely be challenging, amazing and full of knowledge. I will be giving your weekly dose of Congolese Culture and this week we’re starting with something Congolese are know for… amazing music!

Meet Baloji. His name means Sorcerer in Swahili and Tshiluba ( two of the four official Congolese languages). Baloji is a Congolese-Belgian rapper, who is known to mix the modern and old Congolese music styles to share his story and denounce injustice.

This is his rendition of  the famous song “Independence Cha Cha”  released in 1960 by an amazing Congolese Artist Joseph “Grand Kalle” Kabasele. Back then,Congolese were celebrating their independence from the Belgians and everywhere you went this song was blasting. So kick back, let loose and enjoy that Congolese guitar and don’t forget to check out more of Baloji’s music!

FWintern FWun

The FWintern application said something along the lines of, “If you’re looking for the most down and out, upside down, never sleep or shower, work till you drop exhausting semester of your life; we are your people”.

Though it was a few days ago, Falling Whistles Day 1 went something like:

Spotlight Sunday, y’all!

Oh, hey there Tumblr pals.

This marks our first Spotlight Sunday.  Each week I’ll be introducing you to another member of the fall FWintern family, and trust me, they cannot wait.  Tumblring is our jam, apparently.  Before we start those intros however, I think it’s necessary to introduce us as a whole.

Let’s Get to Know Each Other

Hi Friends!

I’m here to ask you those tricky questions that get you thinking and talking. I’m not a hundred percent convinced on my question-creating abilities but I do thoroughly enjoy asking lots of questions so lets hope I hit the mark.

So, before I get into those deep philosophical questions that get your brain ticking (I know, I’m really setting the bar high for myself!) I’ll start with you. Yes, you, my friend. Who are you? How are you? Try, maybe in a sentence or two, to fill me in. I’d love to know where you’re from, how you heard about Falling Whistles, what you’re passionate about. I’m sure we will be fast friends.

I feel a little rude now not introducing myself, as I am asking you to do that for me. In a nutshell, I’m Harriet! I’m from New Zealand, where yes, we have lots of sheep and Flight of the Conchords was filmed. I discovered Falling Whistles through some good old internet trawling. I’m passionate about a few things but the thing that’s at the front of my mind at the moment is, most definitely, Peace in Congo. Let’s make it happen!

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Harriet xx

Welcome Tumblrs!

FW Culinary Intern Arianna here, ready to serve up a healthy dose of Food for Thought. What’s on the menu tonight, you ask? A heaping helping of peas.

Meet Jeremy Gilley. If Falling Whistles is crazy to try to end the longest war in history, then Jeremy Gilley is “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” insane. His goal: one day of peace. Check out his inspirational July 2011 Ted Talk. Luckily, us FWinters love crazy and hopefully you do too, so join us in signing Jeremy’s petition, Peace One Day.

I’m a big fan of planning ahead, so grab your calendar and join me in marking your menus— September 21, 2011: world peas.

Jeremy Gilley, your friends at Falling Whistles salute you!

Stay hungry, my friends

Arianna

I know that Meghan is the one who blogs about everything fun and exciting that we do in LA, but since she wasn’t at FNO, I figured I could give you all the rundown.

Spotlight Sunday, y’all!

Hellooooo Tumblr!

It’s time for my first real installment of Spotlight Sunday, and I’m going to test it out on myself.  No one else wanted to be my guinea pig for my first round of questions. FINE, TEAM. Actually, I wanted to make sure y’all were okay with my question choices before interviewing others.

So. Without further ado…

That’s me. Julia Bates. At the beach. Near home. You’re welcome, world.
