JOEL BERNSTEIN’S ALBUM DEBUT

Three years ago, Joel Bernstein was watching his friend Josiah on a webcast after being recently featured on American Idol and The Ellen Show. A fan asked what the whistle was and Josiah explained. Joel was inspired to get one and has worn it every day since it came.

“The whistle, for me, is a sign of hope. Seeing people wear it or even talk about it gives me hope that people want to do the right thing.”

Joel is 18 and lives in Germantown, Maryland. Over the past couple of months, Joel raised a humble $800 for his first full length album on Indiegogo. He took the funds and made his way to the McNally Smith College of Music in Minnesota to record with his producer Trevor Rodriguez.

“This is my ﬁrst time in a real music studio…”

The album is called “This Is What My Heart Sounds Like” and it was released this Tuesday.

When we asked Joel what he would do if he knew he wouldn’t fail, he told us “I want to tour the world playing shows and telling people about my whistle. I believe that music has the power to change the world, no matter who you are.”

We agree, Joel.

WHISTLEBLOWERS IN STOCKHOLM.

Over the last two years, Stockholm has become an integral hub for Falling Whistles.

A large and growing crew of musicians and dancers, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, designers and creators have been gathering around the whistle. You can walk the streets and almost surely spot one, particularly in the city’s most colorful hotspots, and probably on a long black chain.

That is indeed exactly what happened to our friend and talented photographer Jimmy Hansen while he was working with the popular gastropub restaurant Le Rouge.

In 2011, Jimmy was busy with his life of commercial and fashion photography. His current project at the time, was shooting a cookbook with the chef at Le Rouge. It was also right then, when two inspired young leaders were busy organizing the first Falling Whistles event in Sweden. It happened to be at that restaurant.

“Ian came to Sweden, thanks to Anders, and presented Falling Whistles in a way I’d never heard, about a war I’d never heard of” said Jimmy. “Falling Whistles is now a major part of my life.”

Last year, Jimmy went on to help form the Stockholm Whistler Society. “I was working so much for Falling Whistles, I forgot to work for myself.” He passed on gigs and helped build the campaign, forming a coalition in Sweden that was dedicated to speaking what others would not.

When he recently came to visit us in Los Angeles, he showed us images from a shoot he’d done for Falling Whistles. They are “portraits of the young Swedish rebels” as Jimmy describes. “I want these rebels to wake up and do what each person is able to do.”

At Falling Whistles, we say the sound of a whistle is beautiful and disruptive, a mantra that guides our work. This gang realizes both, in a serious way.

With the current events happening in Stockholm, we are proud to know the whistleblowers who stand for peace.
