Laundry
Two weeks ago I decided to do laundry. I packed up my musty, smelly clothes and walked down to the Laundromat to get it done.  My only incentive was Whole Foods, located conveniently next-door. I was going to pop my clothes in the washer and sit outside Whole Foods for 45 minutes tops, and read while my clothes finally got clean. So I sat outside reading the biography of revolutionary Ernesto...

No Such Thing as Too Much Sugar
A few things were brought to my attention today, with the help of a few masterful individuals: 1. Cat food size bags, according to Sloan, of Sour Punch Kids and Sour Punch Watermelons provide enough sugar to power the minds of 7 ladies for 37 minutes….then stomach pains kick in…followed by further need for sugar. 2. Nerd Ropes can be created in times of crisis by sticking together...

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to ...

Exercise!
We at the Falling Whistles intern house like to think that we run sort of often. Here’s a story about that. During cross country season, Jack Power, who was the best coach I’ve ever had, gave our team a lecture about what to and not to think about while running. “You think about your body,” he said. “Your breathing, your rhythm, your next step. You do not think about...

Sleep to Dream
I underestimated what Sean and the FW Staff meant by the most “down and out, upside down, never sleep or shower, work till you drop, exhausting semester of your life” on the internship application. Granted, I think we’ve done a decent job of bathing thus far; otherwise, they weren’t kidding. I woke up this morning on the loveseat in our jam-packed house. Even though my...

TRUST WOMEN
Today is the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This from the HuffPost: “Instead of writing about the legislation the rhetoric, or the politics surrounding reproductive rights and justice, let’s keep it simple. Let’s just trust women.” Jessica Valenti lays out four reasons to trust women: “Trust women to know what’s best for themselves and their families, Trust young women to make decisions...

Soul Stopper
This is for my friend Murphy…Her physical being was a dog, though to us she was so much more… I left you two weeks ago, didn’t think to say goodbye. All the things I would have said, had I known. We were pals almost immediately, though I’m sure I knew it before you did. I could tell by your smile, your mellow saunter and your deep stare that you were a soul worth...

Stone Soup
There were three interns who had walked a long, long way and were very, very hungry. The villagers heard of their impending arrival and, in anticipation of their want for food, decided that they would hide all of their goods. “We will certainly not share!” they exclaimed. The grocer hid all of her tofu in the dark cellar. The farmer hid her vegetables under the squeaky tin bed. ...

Rain, rain, go away (but don't rush)
Today was a new kind of Monday for a few reasons: 1. My morning commute from downtown to Venice took twenty minutes, instead of sixty. What a treat! 2. It rained and rained and RAINED for the better part of the day.  For those of you unfamiliar with Los Angeles’s relationship with precipitation, it’s not a favorable one. Streets flooded, our well-crafted-by-the-interns office...

© Social He(art) “It gives me strength, almost unbelievable strength, to know that you are there. I covet your eyes, your ears, the collapsible space between us. How blessed are we to have each other? I am alive and you are alive so we must fill the air with our words. I will fill today, tomorrow, every day until I am taken back to God. I will tell stories to people who will listen and to...

Defying the Odds
“In Africa, DEFYING THE ODDS is a way of life”. This coming from a recent article published by Christian Science. We are seeing now the need for these words to cross borders. Already 50,000 bodies have been found in the Haitian aftermath, though the President estimates the total lives lost will exceed 100,000. While aid relief continues to reach the ground, those affected by this earthquake are...

Barefoot Painters for Hire!
Would you like to know how talented the Falling Whistles interns are? Let me tell you. We paint, construct, glue, travel, run, jump, giggle, destruct, think, breath, hike, laugh, paint, bend, bake, cook, write, create, bike, fly, eat/consume (enormous amounts of food), whateva we’re needed for. Today we wrapped up clean up of our Fred Segal installation in Santa Monica and worked on...

Blog it out.
Ladies and gentlemen, readers around the world: let it be known that the Spring Interns are NOT messing around. This group of ladies is going to shake. things. up. 9am kicked off our first official day of work; without a moment to spare, we dove right in.  Faced with a daunting fund-raising assignment, we convened under the warm Venice sun and had a meeting of the minds.  I assure you, these...

Boot Camp=Accomplished
Hey everyone! I’m Ashlee, one of the Spring 2010 interns.  I come from the great state of Arkansas :).  As many of you have read thus far, we have had an amazing week of training, A.K.A. “boot camp.”  We have learned a numerous amount of things and have been challenged to make the impossible possible. Last night, the FW staff had a wonderful night planned for us.  We began by eating dinner with...

Our Sacrifice, Our Mission
“”The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative maladjustment of a nonconforming minority.” -MLK Jr. Needless to say, this week has been intense.  We have all received the most overpowering information from some of the most inspiring people.  So now, I think the big question for all of...

Peace and Peanut Butter
Trying to find a common thread, ways to connect with those wanting to share in our story. A way to spread our ideas in a single language. A language of peace. But how do we go about this? How can we find a way to connect? Let the brainstorming begin. In the house the topic of Peanut Butter comes up quite frequently. Today, if my counting is correct, we have discussed it four times already. You...
